Biography:
Cuilan Liu, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. During her doctoral work at Harvard, she made a full-length documentary film, Young Jigme, screened at the 2015 International Jean Rouch Film Festival in Paris. Her research focuses on the legal interaction between Buddhism and the state. In addition to co-editing a volume on the history of Buddhist monasticism, she has published in History of Religions, Journal of Law and Religion, Journal of Chinese Religions, Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, Journal of the American Oriental Society, and Journal of Indian Philosophy. She is currently working on her book Buddhism in the Court, a project that examines the interaction between Buddhism and the society In India, China, and Tibet.
